After principal photography was done on the film Dust Up, and my cinematography duties were completed, I was tasked with coming up with a title sequence design concept for the film. For inspiration, I poured over a bunch of old Western movie posters, my favorite being The Outlaw, starring Jane Russell. I really love the font combinations and the red and yellow color schemes, so I used that as the base for the design of the look. I also really loved Jesse Philips’ A Fistful of Dollars posters and Billy Perkins’ set for The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, so I had them sitting on my desktop for inspiration.
To get the look, I pulled clips and stills from the film into Photoshop and converted them into high contrast black and white. I then layered in the red and yellow colors and finally the texture over the top of them. Below are some of the initial concept designs featuring the main characters in the film.
After that, Adam Tiller took over and masterfully created the full opening credit sequence and the music video for Spindrift’s Hellbound.
